PURPOSE:
Strangulation is a subject of domestic violence cases that presents unique challenges to both the investigation and prosecution. DeKalb County would benefit greatly by partnering with the Training Institute on Strangulation Prevention to provide a 4 - day intensive training to all multidisciplinary team members involved in the investigation, prosecution, intervention, and advocacy of domestic violence cases.
In addition to training, community outreach is important to prevent strangulation and to educate the general public on the harm that can be produced by this act.
NEED/IMPACT:
In addition to intense training, funds can also be used to purchase Domestic Violence/ Strangulation Evidence Collection Kits. These kits provide step - by step instructions and materials for properly examining and maintain forensic evidence in strangulation cases. These kits are often outside the traditional budget for domestic violence resource centers, the funds designated from Commissioner Mereda Davis Johnson would provide a practical resource to strengthen cases.
