PURPOSE:
To consider reserving $4,000,000.00 of SPLOST funds from line item 1F - Bridge Repairs and Improvements for design and construction of a replacement Cedar Grove Road bridge over Norfolk Southern Railroad; and
To consider reserving $145,000.00 of SPLOST funds from line item 1D - Transportation Enhancements for construction of road improvements along the bridge detour route.
NEED/IMPACT:
The Cedar Grove Road bridge over Norfolk Southern Railroad (built in 1965) is currently closed to traffic as a result of problems identified by GDOT in their bi-annual inspection. These problems are due in part to the bridge’s age and to increased loads from trucks not following the posted weight limits. Discussions are underway with an on-call engineering firm, AECOM, to provide design services for a replacement bridge. It is anticipated that a design/build process will be used to expedite completion of the new bridge, which is expected to take approximately two years. Improvements proposed to the detour route include shoulder widening and turn radius improvements. It is anticipated that existing on-call contractors will be used to implement these improvements.
FISCAL IMPACT:
SPLOST funds in the amount of $4,145,000.00 will cover the cost of the bridge replacement and related improvements to the detour route.
RECOMMENDATION:
Recommended Action
To reserve $4,000,000.00 of SPLOST funds from line item 1F - Bridge Repair and Improvements for design and construction of a replacement Cedar Grove Road bridge over Norfolk Southern Railroad; and
To reserve $145,000.00 of SPLOST funds from line item 1D - Transportation Enhancements for construction of road improvements along the bridge detour route.
