PURPOSE:

To consider accepting an additional $43,666 for the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) Grant from the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council to the District Attorney for the grant period of October 01, 2017 - March 31, 2021; and

To extend the grant’s expiration date from March 31, 2020 to June 30, 2021; and

To authorize the CEO to execute all necessary documents.

NEED/IMPACT:

CJCC was awarded $3,000,000 under BJA’s 2017 Sexual Assault Initiative Grant to develop a cold case Sexual Assault Task Force to respond to cases resulting from the testing of sexual assault kits identified under this project.  DeKalb, along with Cobb County and the Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council representing the State of Georgia, were identified as key partners in this initiative involving prosecuting aged rape cases resulting from a massive kit testing initiative.

The District Attorney was previously awarded $722,291 under this initiative. CJCC is awarding an additional $43,666 to DeKalb’s portion of the award, for the specific purpose of the 3-month extension.

FISCAL IMPACT:

No additional or matching funds are required, so none are being requested at this time.
