PURPOSE:

To consider allocating $500,000.00 of SPLOST II, Category B3 - Bicycle Paths/Lanes/Multi-use Trails Funding for the Laredo Drive Bicycle Facility

NEED/IMPACT:

Laredo Drive was recently resurfaced between the Avondale city limits and East Ponce de Leon Avenue. The corridor serves as an important connection between the Stone Mountain Trail and East Ponce de Leon Avenue at Laredo Drive, near the DeKalb Farmers Market. Currently, a gap exists in the bicycle network along this segment. To capitalize on the recently completed resurfacing, the County proposes to reallocate existing pavement through roadway restriping to implement the planned bicycle facility. Completing the striping immediately following resurfacing provides a cost-effective opportunity to establish the future roadway configuration while minimizing additional construction costs. In addition to restriping, several supplemental improvements are necessary to provide a continuous and safe bicycle connection. These improvements include limited roadway widening at a pinch point, installation of barrier separators to buffer bicycle lanes from vehicular traffic, and construction of short segments of multiuse path near intersections where widening is constrained by existing turn lanes. The proposed work will be completed through the County’s annual construction contract to expedite delivery and improve connectivity for bicyclists within the corridor.

FISCAL IMPACT:

$500,000.00 of SPLOST II, Category B3 - Bicycle Paths/Lanes/Multi-use Trails Funding for the Laredo Drive Bicycle Facility
