PURPOSE:

The DeKalb County Board of Commissioners through the Code of DeKalb County has the authority to rename County buildings and DeKalb County Police Department seeks to rename the East Precinct, located at 2484 Bruce Street, Lithonia, Georgia as the Chief Eddie Moody Precinct, in honor of former Police DeKalb County Police Chief Eddie Moody, and requests that, under the direction of the Chief Executive Officer, the appropriate County departments install appropriate signage and implement the designation in accordance with County policies and procedures.

 

NEED/IMPACT:

The DeKalb County Police Department East Precinct serves a vital public safety resource for residents and communities throughout the eastern portion of the County and represents the County’s continued commitment to professional law enforcement, community engagement and, public safety.

 

Chief Eddie Moody, the first African American Chief of Police in DeKalb County dedicated approximately three decades of his professional career to the DeKalb County Police Department, beginning with his service with the Department in 1973 and rising through its ranks to ultimately serve as Chief of Police. During his tenure, Chief Moody held numerous positions of increasing responsibility and become a respected leader with the department.

 

As Chief of Police, Moody provided leadership during a consequential period in the history of the department and worked to strengthen the Department’s professionalism, effectiveness, community engagement, and organizational capacity. Among his notable contributions are the creation of the Junior Police Academy, and the establishment of the department’s Crime Analysis Unit. Chief Moody also played a significant leadership role in major criminal investigations.

 

Chief Moody’s career also reflects the evolution of the DeKalb County Police Department and the advancement of opportunities for generations of officers who followed him. His progression from an entry-level position within the Department to its highest-ranking leadership position.

 

Following his retirement from DeKalb County in 2004, Chief Moody continued his commitment to public safety and local government, later serving as Chief of Police for the City of Lithonia and in additional leadership capacities within the city.

 

FISCAL IMPACT:

The cost associated with this name change are anticipated to be limited to costs associated with the fabrication and installation of appropriate facility signage and related implementation expenses, as determined by the Administration.

Recommended Action

To approve the resolution renaming the DeKalb County Police Department East Precinct as the Chief Eddie Moody Precinct and authorize the Chief Executive Officer, or her designee, to direct the appropriate County departments to take all necessary actions to effectuate the designation, including the installation of appropriate signage, in accordance with County policies and procedures.
