Body
Information Contact: Commissioner Michelle Long Spears
Phone Number: 404-371-2863
PURPOSE:
Support health screenings, navigation and referrals through free community events and services at the Mexican and Peruvian Consulates.
NEED/IMPACT:
DeKalb County serves a diverse and growing population, including Latino and immigrant communities who often face significant barriers to accessing services. Many residents experience:
• Limited English proficiency which hinders their ability to navigate health, housing, and civic systems.
• Limited or diverse documentation status which prevents them from receiving certain public benefits.
• Employment in front-line occupations where they are at higher risk of health issues but often lack health insurance.
• Multiple dependents and transportation barriers that limit access to services and health care.
The requested allocation ensures that these underserved groups are not left behind. It directly supports health screenings, referrals, and in-language educational programs that fill critical service gaps. Without this funding, hundreds of residents would go without preventive care, rights-based education, and the navigation support needed to connect with available county resources.
FISCAL IMPACT:
An amount not to exceed $35,000 to the Latino Community Fund from the Board of Commissioners District 2 ARP Interest fund (00202.582206.100.0000.0000).
RECOMMENDATION:
Recommended Action
To approve the allocation of $35,000 and authorize the chief executive officer or her designee to execute all necessary documents.
