PURPOSE:

To approve the transfer of $46,000 from the District 6 reserve for appropriations to the United Way of Greater Atlanta’s AARP Experience Corps to pilot this much is needed reading program to ensure Woodward Elementary students have a chance to increase their reading proficiency and thus their opportunity to graduate from high school, secure jobs and/or higher education.  This has been confirmed as a Title 1 School and has 12% of students at or above the proficient level for reading.

 

NEED/IMPACT:

AARP Foundation Experience Corps is a community-based volunteer program that empowers people over 50 to serve as tutors to help students become better readers by the end of third grade. It is a proven “triple win,” helping students succeed, older adults thrive, and communities grow stronger.

The program ensures volunteer success through extensive training, peer networks, and ongoing evaluation. Experience Corps employs a structured, evidence-based model that improves the overall reading ability of students by building their fluency, accuracy, and comprehension skills. This funding equivalates providing approximately 30 K-3 students:

Recommended Action

To approve the requested D6 Reserve for appropriation to the United Way of Greater Atlanta and authorize the Chief Executive Officer or his designee to execute all necessary documents.
