PURPOSE:
To appropriate an amount not to exceed $10,000 from the 2024 District 6 Reserves for Appropriations for Science for Georgia (Sci4Ga) to complete the Statement of Work “DeKalb County Environmental Education & Engagement”. This study will include gathering data sets to create an overall picture of the socio-economic and environmental health of a community, expanding a citizen science water-quality monitoring project, scope increased air and water quality monitoring and reporting needs, and conducting a community meeting to educate residents on this work and ways to get involved.
NEED/IMPACT:
This proposed scope of work (attached) will seek to educate, engage, and empower DeKalb residents to be active participants in sustainable and environmental justice initiatives. Data is crucial in knowing the health and safety of our environment but understanding the data is just as crucial. This proposed scope of work will create a data story that communicates an overall picture of the socio-economic and environmental health of a community. Further, Sci4Ga will ideate on what an air monitor program could look like for DeKalb County to ensure this data is readily available. Sci4Ga will also work with residents to define actionable questions to be answered and further provide ways for residents to be involved.
Recent events in surrounding municipalities have highlighted the need to monitor our air and water and to be able to best communicate with residents if they need to stay inside or other best practices to remain healthy. This scope of work will act as the first step towards building out infrastructure to ensure this data is available but also empower residents to understand their environmental health and engage with DeKalb County towards solutions.
