PURPOSE:

To consider accepting $19,100 from the State of Georgia’s Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency for the Georgia Gang Activity Prosecution (GAP) Grant for the grant period of November 9, 2023-May 15, 2024; and

To authorize the CEO to execute all necessary documents.

NEED/IMPACT:

The District Attorney was awarded $19,100 under the Georgia Gang Activity Grant Program for the purpose of enhancing resources for successful gang prosecution. The D.A.’s Office’s Homicide and Gang Unit, in conjunction with its Digital Forensics Unit, will be utilizing the funding for the purchase of licenses and training for a sophistical facial recognition platform. The technology will enable investigation to not only develop leads, but also follow leads in gang and homicide cases where either only one suspect has been identified or where there are known witnesses on scene to the crime that were not initially cooperative with police investigation. Additionally, almost every gang case involves some form of surveillance footage.  The new platform will allow for screen captures from the video, with then the images then being able to be input into databases that will generate new leads and more successful prosecutions of gang-related crimes in DeKalb County.

FISCAL IMPACT:

No match funds, and no additional County funding is being requested.
