PURPOSE:

In January 2023 an agenda item was approved by the Board of Commission for District 4 and 6 to support the Design Studio collaboration focusing on the greater Scottdale and Scottdale Overlay District. This agenda item is to appropriate reserve for appropriation funds from District 6 to partner with the City of Doraville to reimagine the town of Doraville through sustainable and resilient redevelopment incorporating high performance urbanist principals.

NEED/IMPACT:

Doraville strives to be a preferred destination by leading in economic development, education and providing a welcoming, safe, clean, diverse and walkable community. It is conveniently located to both Hwy 85 and Hwy 285 and is recognized for its diverse community, with residents from various backgrounds and cultures.

This year’s Design Studio project brings together urban design, architecture with consideration of the “Green New Deal”, and high-performance building students to collaborate on producing urban design proposals and modeling their performance. Georgia Tech School of Architecture students will reimagine the town of Doraville through sustainable and resilient redevelopment incorporating high performance urbanist principals. Student teams from the Georgia Tech School of Architecture, led by Ellen Dunham-Jones, will produce proposals to incorporate sustainable urban and planning designs for the Scottdale overlay district using transportation, use of subdividing and land use, as well as partnering with High Performance Building Lab for sustainability input.

MicroLife Institute will support this Design Studio by aiding in logistics and connecting with the community while supporting the initiatives of both GA Tech and DeKalb County. After the Design Studio, MicroLife will work on educating and informing the results with the community and local leaders. (Scope included)
