PURPOSE:

The Georgia Council for International Visitors (GCIV) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1962. GCIV works with the
U.S. Department of State to develop a broad spectrum of professional and cultural exchange programs for emerging global leaders. Their non-partisan citizen diplomacy programs provide Georgians with unique opportunities to share best practices, insights, and friendship with distinguished visitors to the United States. This District 6 appropriation will support the Welcoming DeKalb initiative and efforts to identify and implement collaborative programs that coincide with cultural programs to enhance local and global engagement.

NEED/IMPACT:

In October 2023, the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to pass the mid-year budget, which included $150,000 to Decide DeKalb to seed and incubate a Welcoming DeKalb Office to support immigrants and refugees in DeKalb. This collaboration with GCIV further enhances our investment in the Welcoming DeKalb initiative and our vision to continuing to embrace the notion that our diversity in DeKalb County is a spectrum and every citizen should have the opportunity to be more globally engaged through people-to-people connections. Last year, GCIV hosted 352 visitors from 105 different countries.

This District 6 allocation used to continue to support staffing to identify and structure opportunities to implement program and participant strategies. This funding support FY2025 (40 hours a week x 13 weeks in the last quarter x $19/hour = $10,000.
