PURPOSE:

To consider accepting increased funding for the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) Grant (S50-8-002 , CV360 project #106986/award # 603073) from the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council to the District Attorney’s Office in the amount of $373,291 for the grant period of October 01, 2023 - September 30, 2026; and

To extend the grant’s expiration date from September 30, 2026 to December 31, 2026; and

To continue the position funded by the grant and move 2 positions funded by a depleted SAKI grant to this current award, extending all 3 until the grant’s expiration; and

To authorize the CEO to execute all necessary documents.

NEED/IMPACT:

Since 2017, CJCC has been awarded over $10,000,000 under BJA’s  Sexual Assault Initiative grant programs to develop a cold case statewide Sexual Assault Task Force to respond to cases resulting from the testing of aged sexual assault kits identified under this project.  DeKalb was identified, and has remained, a key partner and state-wide best practice expert in this initiative. CJCC has received approval of a budget modification to reallocate unspent funds to the District Attorney’s Office to continue and extend the D.A’s SAKI unit, consisting of an existing prosecutor, an existing full-time investigator, and existing part-time investigator.

FISCAL IMPACT:

No additional local funds are necessary, and none are being requested.
