PURPOSE:

Appropriation of $5,000 from the 2024 District 2 Reserve for Appropriation to GALEO to Support Efforts to Increase Civic Participation in the Latino Community Programs and Develop Prominent Latino Leaders.

NEED/IMPACT:

GALEO is a non-profit organization founded in 2003 that serves as a frontline resource for the Latino community throughout the metro-area with a focus in the Buford Highway corridor. GALEO engages in advocacy, networking, leadership and skill development for the Latino community. GALEO strives for a better Georgia where the Latino community is engaged civically, and its contributions and concerns are recognized. This $5,000 appropriation will support efforts to capture what is needed and wanted from, as well as what is contributed by the Latino community. These efforts will be achieved by using traditional, grassroots organizing

tactics, such as door-to-door canvassing, community house parties, and townhall meetings, in addition to modern organizing methods through social media and direct contact messaging. The data compiled along with recommendations will be presented to the Georgia Legislature, Governor and local elected officials as appropriate in 2024. As of 2020, metro Atlanta is one of the fastest growing regions for Latino growth. Over 49% of all foreign-born residents in metro Atlanta identify as Hispanic and/or Latino. This growth is due to the steady increase in Latino businesses making the metro area a hub for Latino growth and opportunity. GALEO is a key supporter of this growth and development.
