Title

Commission District(s): Super District 6

To Allocate $5,000.00 from the 2026 District 6 Reserve for Appropriation Account to Support Nia's Place Supervised Visitation and Exchange Center

Information Contact: Commissioner Edward C. “Ted” Terry

Phone Number: 404-371-4909

PURPOSE:

Nia's Place is a supervised visitation and safe exchange center operated by Women's Resource Center to End Domestic Violence (WRCDV), a victim service agency with a 40-year history serving DeKalb County families. Since opening in 2008, Nia's Place has served families affected by domestic violence, dating violence, child sexual abuse, sexual assault, and stalking. Judges from DeKalb County Magistrate Court routinely refer families to Nia's Place and services are provided at no cost to participants.

NEED/IMPACT:

Studies show that the period after leaving a relationship can be one of the most dangerous for a domestic violence survivor and her children. Even with a Temporary Protective Order or no-contact bond in place, many victims must have regular contact with their abusers to exchange children for visitation or custody. Supervised visitation and safe exchange services can significantly increase survivor safety during this critical period.

This allocation will support critical operating funds for the estimated 230 DeKalb County residents (112 parents and 118 children) - survivors of domestic violence, their children, and visiting parents working to maintain safe family relationships.

Every dollar invested in Nia's Place helps ensure that families in DeKalb County have access to a safe space to maintain parent-child bonds without compromising safety.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Board of Commissioners (District 6) - General Fund - Other Professional Services
