PURPOSE:
To appropriate $1,600 from the District 6 Reserve for Appropriations to GALEO in support of Spanish
speaking community engagement on the PDK Master Plan and outreach in Latinx communities living on and
surrounding Buford Highway. GALEO, a trusted partner in Latinx communities for their years of canvassing
and working in neighborhoods surrounding Buford Highway, will use these funds to knock on roughly 1,000
doors and engage Latinx residents on an upcoming bilingual PDK Master Plan Town Hall. This $1,600 includes
printing costs for educational fliers and canvassing efforts.
NEED/IMPACT:
DeKalb County has a population of over 757,000 residents. According to census data and World Population
Review, 8.6% (roughly over 65,000) of DeKalb's population identifies as a part of the Latinx community and
7.46% (roughly 56,450) speak Spanish. Spanish is also the second most spoken language in DeKalb County,
behind English. It is crucial to engage all DeKalb County residents on master plans the county intends to move
forward with and ensure every effort is made to educate on these master plans and to receive community input.
Hosting bilingual, informational Town Halls is a way to ensure this information is accessible. GALEO is a
trusted partner in Latinx communities for their years of canvassing and working in neighborhoods surrounding
