Information Contact: Commissioner Michelle Long Spears
Phone Number: 404-371-2863
PURPOSE:
To allocate $4154.75 from Commission District 2 Reserve for Appropriation to PAWS Atlanta to support spay and neuter initiatives
NEED/IMPACT:
This funding is essential to support PAWS Atlanta’s ongoing efforts to manage and reduce the stray and unwanted animal population within DeKalb County. Many residents face financial barriers to accessing affordable spay and neuter services, leading to continued pet overpopulation and strain on local shelters. By funding these services, DeKalb County directly addresses a root cause of animal homelessness and shelter overcrowding.
The targeted funding for community cats and post-birth mother animals is particularly needed - these groups are among the most at risk for contributing to uncontrolled breeding cycles if not sterilized. Without this intervention, DeKalb County would continue to experience an influx of surrendered animals and stray litters, placing pressure on county animal control and rescue organizations.
FISCAL IMPACT:
An amount not to exceed $4154.75 from the District 2 FY25 Reserve for Appropriation (00202.579002.100.000.0000)
RECOMMENDATION:
Recommended Action
To approve the allocation and authorize the Chief Executive Officer or her designee to execute all necessary documents.
