PURPOSE:
Built through a grassroots community effort, the Bruce Street School was the first African-American public school in DeKalb County. While the stone school was built in the late 1930s, the Bruce Street School’s history of community-led education efforts goes back to the 1880s. The ruins that remain stand as a legacy to African-American education in DeKalb County and the power of community. Today, the remains of the historic school sit adjacent to the location of the future East DeKalb Senior Center. This creates an exciting opportunity to not only preserve the ruins but also create a place for community to gather and to tell this important story.
NEED/IMPACT:
This item will allow Arabia Mountain Heritage Alliance to obtain a conceptual study inclusive of the following:
§ Pre-Design,
§ Site Inventory/Analysis,
§ Public Charette/Brainstorming,
§ Conceptual Development Services,
§ Construction Budget Estimate Coordination, and
§ Concept Development Presentation/Construction Budget Estimate Deliverable.
