Appointment of Jamil S. Zainaldin to the DeKalb County Public Library Board of Trustees

PURPOSE:
Pursuant to 13A of the Organizational Act where “The chief executive shall nominate a person by sending a written notice to the commission,” CEO Thurmond is nominating Jamil S. Zainaldin for appointment to the DeKalb County Public Library Board of Trustees. Mr. Zainaldin will be filling the expired seat previously held by Dr. E. Culpepper. This is a four-year term which begins upon confirmation and continues through December 31, 2023.
NEED/IMPACT:
The operation of the DeKalb County Public Library is legally vested in the Board of Trustees under the provision of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated, Title 20, Chapter 5, Article 40. Per the Constitution and By-Laws of the DeKalb County Public Library eight (8) county appointees from the public at-large serve on the Board of Trustees along with two municipal appointees, the CEO and the Executive Assistant to the CEO. Appointees typically serve four (4) year terms and can be reappointed for a total of three (3) consecutive terms.
Mr. Zainaldin recently retired after twenty years as the President of Georgia Humanities. Through the years, he has served as an adjunct faculty member at Emory, Georgia Tech and Georgetown. He has served on a variety of boards including the Robert W. Woodruff Library Board, The Georgia Historical Advisory Commission and the Global Advisory Board for the Center for Civil and Human Rights among others. Mr. Zainaldin lives in Dunwoody Ga and will be an asset to the DeKalb County Public Library Board of Trustees.
