PURPOSE:
To allocate $10,000 from District 2 Reserve for Appropriation to Tucker First United Methodist Church to support their cold weather shelter and shower ministry.
NEED/IMPACT:
The requested allocation is needed to sustain and expand critical services provided by Tucker First United Methodist Church’s Cold Weather Refuge and Shower Ministry, which addresses urgent gaps in shelter, hygiene, and basic needs for unhoused residents. Demand for both overnight refuge during dangerously cold weather and weekly meal, shower, and laundry services has grown significantly-now serving over 70 individuals weekly and exceeding safe nightly shelter capacity-while operating costs and volunteer strain have increased due to more frequent cold weather events and over 80 service events annually. Despite strong community volunteer support, current resources are insufficient to maintain safe operations, upgrade essential infrastructure, and meet rising demand, making county funding essential to ensure continuity, safety, and dignity for vulnerable residents while strengthening community-wide efforts to address homelessness.
