PURPOSE:
This proposed Resolution supports establishing an "Honor Hosea" Task Force to engage stakeholders including but not limited to, the DeKalb SCLC, on the creation of a fitting tribute(s) to the Reverend Dr. Hosea Lorenzo Williams, Sr., that would include the erection of a statue in his memory in the plaza of the DeKalb County Courthouse so that generations to come will know of his life, his works, and that he always came home, from his battles for justice, to DeKalb County.
NEED/IMPACT:
Hosea Lorenzo Williams, Sr. was a Georgia-born and educated, resident of DeKalb County for 35 years until he passed in 2000. He became a prolific organizer of campaigns for justice and the only prominent civil rights leader to work in the trenches in the two campaigns that led to the most significant legislation produced by the modern-day Civil Rights Movement. During his distinguished political career, Rev Dr. Hosea Lorenzo Williams, Sr. served DeKalb County at every level of elected representation - Georgia House of Representatives for five terms (1974-85), the Atlanta City Council representing DeKalb residents living in Atlanta (1985-90), and DeKalb County Commissioner (1990- 94).
A significant art of the Williams legacy is known today as Hosea Helps, INC. to reflect its wide-ranging social mission in support of the thousands of people in metropolitan Atlanta and other service providers across the state.
