Commission District(s): Commission District 2

Allocation of $50,000 from District 2 ARPI Funds to Support Domestic Violence Victims and their Pets

Information Contact: Commissioner Michelle Long Spears

Phone Number: 404-371-2863

PURPOSE:

To allocate $50,000 from District 2 ARPI funds to support domestic violence victims and their pets

NEED/IMPACT:

This allocation is needed to remove a major barrier preventing domestic violence survivors in DeKalb County from seeking safety: the inability to secure safe care for their pets. Up to 89% of pet-owning survivors report that abusers threaten or harm pets, and nearly half delay leaving unsafe situations out of concern for their animals. Ahimsa House, the only organization in Georgia focused on this issue, provides temporary pet housing, veterinary care, transportation, and pet deposits so survivors can access safe housing and achieve long-term stability. This funding will support wraparound services for approximately 26 survivors and their pets, directly improving safety outcomes.

FISCAL IMPACT:

An amount not to exceed $50,000 from 2026 District 2 Reserve for Appropriation (00202.582206.100.0000.0000) to Ahimsa House
