PURPOSE:
To consider accepting an additional $83,783 for the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) Grant from the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council to the District Attorney for the grant period of August 01, 2021 - September30, 2023; and
To extend the grant's expiration date from September 30, 2023 to December 31, 2023; and
To authorize the CEO to execute all necessary documents.
NEED/IMPACT:
CJCC has been awarded $5.5 million to date under BJA's Sexual Assault Initiative Grant to develop a cold case Sexual Assault Task Force to respond to cases resulting from the testing of sexual assault kits identified under this project. DeKalb, along with Cobb County and the Prosecuting Attorneys' Council representing the State of Georgia, have served as key partners in this initiative involving prosecuting aged rape cases resulting from a massive kit testing initiative. DeKalb's funding fully covers the salary and benefits costs of a D.A's Investigator and Assistant District Attorney, exclusively assigned to SAKI cases.
The District Attorney was previously awarded $573,061 under a second round of funding for this initiative. CJCC is awarding the additional funding, revised total award of $656,844, for the specific purpose of extending the project until the continuation State-wide grant award may be accepted.
FISCAL IMPACT:
No additional or matching funds are required, so none are being requested at this time.
