PURPOSE:
To appropriate $35,000 from the District 2 Reserve for Appropriation to Propel ATL for a Walk Audit

NEED/IMPACT:
This project is needed to address the longstanding safety, accessibility, and equity issues along the Buford Highway corridor in DeKalb County, which is a vital route for thousands of residents who walk, bike, or use public transit to access essential services. Despite the high volume of non-car users-over 21% of all trips-the corridor is overwhelmingly designed for vehicular traffic, with 91% of the roadway space dedicated to cars and no infrastructure for bicycles or dedicated bus lanes. This imbalance has contributed to unsafe conditions, especially for pedestrians, and a persistent history of crashes, injuries, and fatalities. A walk audit, conducted with the participation of residents, community organizations, and government stakeholders, will assess current conditions and identify barriers to safe, multimodal transportation.
The project will benefit DeKalb County by generating actionable recommendations based on community-informed data and professional analysis. The audit will not only highlight critical safety concerns but also serve as an advocacy tool to support future infrastructure improvements and transit investments, such as MARTA's Arterial Rapid Transit initiative.
