PURPOSE:

Application of the Director of Planning & Sustainability to accept into the record the DeKalb County Urban Tree Canopy Assessment and to adopt the study’s recommendations.

NEED/IMPACT:

This Urban Tree Canopy Assessment aims to provide a clear understanding of the current state of DeKalb County’s urban forest and how it has changed over time. By documenting these changes, the County can better assess the environmental impacts of land use decisions and plan more effectively for the future. This study is a crucial step in understanding DeKalb’s urban forest through mapping tree canopy change. While tree canopy coverage increased between 2010 and 2023, active management, public involvement, policy and regulations, and further research are necessary to maintain the canopy's health. By advancing the management of its urban forest, DeKalb can continue to enhance the many benefits trees offer to residents and visitors, ultimately supporting their overall well-being.

FISCAL IMPACT:

There is no cost to the County to accept the results of the study into the record and to adopt the recommendations.

RECOMMENDATION:

Recommended Action

To approve the resolution and authorize the Chief Executive Officer to execute all necessary documents to accept into the record the DeKalb County Urban Tree Canopy Assessment and to adopt the study’s recommendations.
