PURPOSE:
To appropriate $25,000 from the 2023 District 2 Reserve for Appropriation funds to Propel ATL.
NEED/IMPACT:
For more than 30 years, Propel ATL (formerly the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition) has fought to transform streets so that citizens can safely ride, walk, and roll. Propel ATL's mission is to create streets where everyone can get around safely, easily, and sustainably. Propel ATL's 2019 strategic plan expanded this mission to include walking and transit. While supporting many programming efforts for bike and pedestrian safety and advocacy work in the area of transit and infrastructure, Propel ATL in DeKalb County has specifically raised awareness of pedestrian safety issues and the increase in pedestrian fatalities, screened for crash hotspots and sought state support for safety improvement projects, made policy recommendations including Vision Zero, Complete Streets, and Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPIs), and encouraged DeKalb to rethink Memorial Drive from a safety and local economic development perspective with the pedestrian in mind. This financial support from District 2 will allow Propel ATL to continue their work in District 2 and the county overall, raising awareness and seeking ways to calm our streets and create safe transportation options for everyone.
