PURPOSE:

To consider the creation of a time-limited regular part-time SAKI Cold Case Investigator in the District Attorney’s Office completely funded by the already accepted Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) Grant, to expire on September 30, 2026; and

To authorize the CEO to execute all necessary documents.

NEED/IMPACT:

The D.A.’s  Office was awarded $576,960  under the Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance’s SAKI grant, passed through the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council,  to continue its existing SAKI Program, accepted by the Board of Commissioners on February 27, 2024. It was then awarded an additional $225,796, previously accepted by the Board of Commissioners on March 12, 2024, specifically to establish a part-time investigator position.  The purpose of the current item is strictly to create the position, to expire as the grant expires, on September 30, 2026, unless a grant extension is requested and approved.

Funds are available in the grant to completely cover the SAKI Investigator Position, which will be classified as Job Code 39035, District Attorney Investigator III.

FISCAL IMPACT:

No additional or matching funds are required, and no additional funds are needed to develop the initiative; no funds are being requested.

RECOMMENDATION:

Recommended Action

Approve the creation of a time-limited regular part-time SAKI Cold Case Investigator position in the District Attorney’s Office completely funded by the already accepted SAKI Grant, to expire on September 30, 2026; and authorize the CEO to execute all necessary documents.
