PURPOSE:
The Purpose of This Agenda Item is to transfer funding to District 5 for the joint Black History Celebration Programming.
NEED/IMPACT:
Supporting Black History Celebration is an important investment in cultural education, community pride, and historical awareness for DeKalb County. This year’s program, which honors the legacy of Congressman John Lewis through theatrical performance and a discussion with the author of John Lewis: A Life, provides residents with a meaningful opportunity to engage with the story of one of Georgia’s most influential civil rights leaders. Celebrating his contributions not only deepens public understanding of the struggle for voting rights and social justice, but also inspires civic engagement and intergenerational dialogue. County support for this event strengthens community connection, uplifts local arts and culture, and reinforces DeKalb’s commitment to honoring the leaders who shaped our shared history.
