PURPOSE:
DeKalb County is dedicated to fostering a community that embraces diversity, values all life, and upholds the principles of equality and human rights. On October 10 the DeKalb County Governing Authority stood in unity by issuing a proclamation, expressing our profound sorrow and condemnation for the tragic loss of Israeli civilians, including children and the elderly, in the terrorist attack on October 7th by Hamas, and acknowledgment of Israel’s right to exist and thereby defend itself.
The DeKalb County Governing body supports nationwide efforts to end the killing of innocent civilians and will continues to condemn the rising antisemitism and Islamophobia that has been seen in the United States and worldwide.
NEED/IMPACT:
Between October 7 and December 12, 2023 war and armed violence have claimed the lives of over 15,000 Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, and 1,200 Israelis, including Americans, thousands more have been wounded, and over two million lives are at imminent risk if the reinstatement of a humanitarian pause is not achieved, and appropriate aid is not assured.
This resolution calls for supporting the humanitarian crisis across Gaza, along with the DeKalb County Board of Commissioners calling for the United States Federal Government holds immense diplomatic, military, and financial power to save Palestinian and Israeli lives, and seek an enduring peace.
