PURPOSE:
To appropriate $4,181.25 of District 6 Reserve for Appropriations to Kathryn Kolb for DeKalb County Tree Ordinance revisions.
NEED/IMPACT:
DeKalb County's current Tree Ordinance has not been updated in over two decades. Tree canopy is shrinking in the Atlanta metro area. Trees are vital for removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, slowing the rate of climate change, preventing erosion, reducing stormwater runoff, and filtering pollutants from our water supply. Updating the Tree Ordinance is crucial for DeKalb County to bring its code up to date and protect DeKalb County's tree canopy.
Further, Kathryn Kolb was instrumental in writing the current DeKalb County Tree Ordinance and has led and assisted with writing other municipalities' Tree Ordinances. She shares over 40 years of field experience in forests and wild lands of the Southeast and has contributed to greater Atlanta's environmental community for over 30 years. This project is in partnership with District 2 and began in January 2024 and ended in May 2025. In October 2024, District 6 paid $6,150 towards the Tree Ordinance Revisions Project. This $4,181.25 finalizes the project and funds 27.875 hours of work from November 2024 to May 2025.
