PURPOSE:
To consider approving the immediate retirement of EOD canine Ducky (K-9 Ducky); and
To consider approving retiring K-9 Ducky to the care of Sergeant J.C. Hansen; and
To consider authorizing the Chief Executive Officer to execute all necessary documents.
NEED/IMPACT:
K-9 Ducky went into service in 2014 as an explosive detection canine with the department and served his entire career with his handler, Sergeant J.C. Hansen. During their time with DeKalb Police, this team has given outstanding service to the department, the citizens of DeKalb County and of the Metro Atlanta region by way of the following:
• K-9 deployments - 360 to include sterility sweeps, Bomb Squad and SWAT activations, and special events.
• Public demonstrations - 45
• Weapons recovered - 8
Currently, Ducky is showing signs of joint pain and other degenerative issues consistent with his advanced age. They include mobility, hygromas, dental problems and a previous issue with a mast cell tumor. Therefore, this request is to retire K-9 Ducky to the care of his handler, Sergeant J.C. Hansen.

Recommended Action
To approve the immediate retirement of EOD canine Ducky (K-9 Ducky); and To approve retiring K-9 Ducky to the care of his handler, Sergeant J.C. Hansen; and To approve the resolution and authorize the Chief Executive Officer to execute all necessary documents.
