PURPOSE:
The John Lewis Commemorative Task Force was initiated to determine the best and most appropriate means to honor the life and legacy of the Congressman John Lewis and celebrate Lewis’ remarkable life and the way in which he bridged the gap between earlier generations of civil rights activists and today’s younger activists who are continuing to fight for justice and equality. The purpose of this resolution is to support the John Lewis Commemorative Task Force’s designation of the former site of the Confederate Obelisk Monument on the grounds of the Historic DeKalb County Courthouse in Decatur, Georgia as the future memorial site honoring Congressman John Lewis.
NEED/IMPACT:
This resolution supports the most fitting way to commemorate Congressman John Lewis’ life, which designates a memorial site that sits wholly, both in DeKalb County, Georgia, and in the City of Decatur, the county seat - the Congressional District Mr. Lewis represented for over thirty-three (33) years.
FISCAL IMPACT:
At this time, there is no cost to the County.

Recommended Action
(1 Approve the attached Resolution dated January 14, 2021; and (2) authorize the Chief Executive Officer to execute all necessary documents.
