PURPOSE:

To authorize the Recreation, Parks and Cultural Affairs Department to apply to the State of Georgia’s Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL) to request funding for the implementation of the 2018 Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). The RPCA Department will provide breakfast and lunch to its summer day campers and to approximately fifty (50) additional non-profit agencies throughout DeKalb County.

NEED/IMPACT:

During the school year, many children receive free or reduced meals through the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). When school recesses for the summer, these children are at risk of hunger.  The 2017 Summer Food Service Program served over 180,000 meals which included breakfast and lunch.  We anticipate meeting or exceeding the same need in 2018.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Fiscal Year 2018 funding to be reimbursed by State of Georgia. The County anticipates the 2018 program to exceed $700,000.

RECOMMENDATION:

Recommended Action

To approve the resolution and authorize the chief executive officer to execute all necessary documents with the State of Georgia’s Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL) to apply, receive and implement the 2018 Summer Food Service Program.
