PURPOSE:

•To consider approving the immediate retirement of narcotics detection canine Rex (K-9 Rex); and
•To consider approving retiring K-9 Rex to the care of his current handler, Detective S. R. Batchelder; and
•To consider authorizing the Chief Executive Officer to execute all necessary documents.

NEED/IMPACT:

Narcotics detection K-9 Rex went into service with the DeKalb County Police Department on June 15, 2015 as a multipurpose canine. K-9 Rex was assigned to Detective S. R. Batchelder to be used on traffic stops, search warrants, package lineups, and occasionally track missing children and elderly patients. K-9 Rex was also slated to be used in demonstrations at community and school events. Initially, K-9 Rex performed well but then his performance diminished.

After consulting with professional K-9 handlers and trainers, it was determined that K-9 Rex is unsuitable for the operational work required of him.  Therefore, this request is to retire K-9 Rex to the care of his handler, Detective S. R. Batchelder.
