PURPOSE:

•To consider approving the FY18 COPS School Violence Prevention Program Grant from the US Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services; and 
•To consider accepting $370,826.00 from the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services and appropriating that amount to the Grant Fund along with appropriating the required match of $123,609.00 to the respective match funds for spending in compliance with the grantor’s requirements; and
•To consider authorizing the Chief Executive Officer to execute the necessary documents.

 

NEED/IMPACT:

The DeKalb County Police Department (DKPD) and the DeKalb County School District (DCSD) have partnered to advance information sharing, provide training, enhance strategic planning, and increase security and safety for DeKalb County Schools. A multidisciplinary approach to policing will be used to identify when school safety is compromised, to implement best practices for prevention, and to enhance practice drills.  Safety and security improvements include expansion of bandwidths and fiber optics to upgrade cameras to show greater detail, support of an independent, emergency generator to prevent power failures, and creation of a fiber optic connection between DKPD’s 911 emergency response center and DCSD camera system.
