PURPOSE:
To consider approving a contract between DeKalb County and the Georgia Department of Human Services to provide transportation services to eligible older adults and persons with disabilities who reside in DeKalb County. The contract for these services would be in effect from July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2020 at a cost of $666,503 to the County.

NEED/IMPACT:
According to the U.S. Census, there are approximately 116,998 seniors living in DeKalb County. Research conducted by the Atlanta Regional Commission indicates that transportation is one of the most identified needs for today's seniors. When asked how they will get around when they can no longer drive, 56% of older adults in DeKalb County plan to be driven around by others, 18% will use public transportation, 8% plan to find some other means and 19% do not know how they will get around. Continued participation in the Georgia Department of Human Services' Coordinated Transportation System is vital to address this need.

The DeKalb Human Services Department has a long-standing partnership with the Georgia Coordinated Transportation System. For the past sixteen (16) years, the Department has participated as a member of this coordinated system, providing approximately 2,000 trips per month to eligible seniors and persons with disabilities. Participants utilize this service to travel to senior centers, medical appointments, and dialysis treatments.
