PURPOSE:

To appropriate District 6 reserve for appropriation funds for the Roots Down Fruitful Communities Initiative.

NEED/IMPACT:

The Fruitful Communities Initiative is a landscaping plan that helps state, county, and local governments, and mid-sized developers establish regenerative food systems through planning and design consulting, training, Productive Urban Landscape (PUL) education, and ongoing community outreach.

Roots Down will host two community forums, accessible to all DeKalb County residents, and two work- sessions focused on work in District 6. Roots Down will analyze DeKalb County code sections that pertain to Roots Down policy work, draft and create educational tools for community involvement with policy through micro-workshops in District 6 communities, propose new policy after collecting community input, and onboard DeKalb County residents to proposed policy.

Roots Down has outlined three spaces for PUL development this Spring. Each space will have its own design, lookbook, and community activation plan. Roots Down will incorporate our already-existing training and education programs into the activation of these spaces. These spaces will create green job opportunities and engage youth with food, ecology, and community.
