DeKalb County No Net Loss of Trees Policy

Information Contact: John. W. Manson IV
Phone Number: 4043716207
PURPOSE:
The purpose of the policy is to ensure that there will be a no net loss of trees on DeKalb County
property. Trees provide an abundance of ecosystem services that are vital to human and
environmental health. Trees aid in reducing flooding and erosion, filtering runoff, and protecting the
watersheds that provide clean drinking water, recreational activities, and wildlife habitats.
NEED/IMPACT:
Trees are particularly important in regulating our local climate. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and aid
in cleaning our air and reducing pollution. Trees reduce the urban heat island effect caused by
pavement, buildings, and other impervious surfaces. Trees provide shade and cooling, which
lessens energy demands and pollution. Shade can reduce the surface temperature by 20 - 45
degrees Fahrenheit compared with/to unshaded areas.
