PURPOSE:
To appropriate District 6 reserve for appropriation funds for the Microlife Institute housing policy, the Innovative Housing Summit, and Atlanta Tiny Home Festival (held in DeKalb County) and related items, thereof.
NEED/IMPACT:
MicroLife Institute will work on using the principles and policies established by the Georgia Tech Design studio to help inspire policy adaptation and ideas for the DeKalb County Comprehensive Land Use Plan.
Additionally, it will execute and market the Tiny House Festival and Innovative Housing Summit. As well as, create a tactical urbanism experience for residents utilizing the Design Studios project as a base conversation starter.
The scope of work provided by the MicroLife Institute will be to advise and support weekly Zoning and code submissions for District 6. Serve as council for the District 6 Office to improve housing options in DeKalb County by developing policy changes that encourage innovative housing developments and help address bikeability and walkability.
The MicroLife Institute will serve as a policy consultant and specific event coordination for DeKalb County, specifically District 6’s office’s involvement in the tiny house festival and innovative housing summit. Consultant's role is to advise, convene, as well as be a strategic implementer of tactical urbanism and ideas that can spark conversation about new housing measures for DeKalb County.
Through research, community engagement events, strategic planning and advice, the MicroLife Institute will work towards the goal of improving housing policy and use of space in DeKalb County. Further, MicroLife will work with the Planning and Sustainability Department and District Offices to recommend revisions to the zoning ordinance and related permitting policies in regards to cottages and cottage courts, as well as accessory dwelling units in order to increase the diversity or housing types in DeKalb County. MicroLife Institute will also provide feedback and recommendations to improve DeKalb County’s community engagement and education processes as they relate to zoning and land use.
The MicroLife Institute will provide community outreach and education regarding the engagement process around zoning, housing policy, and productively providing feedback through the Community Council and BOC process.
FISCAL IMPACT:
Increase appropriations for the following account by the amount indicated below:
Contributions - General Fund - Transfer to Grant Fund (09130.611250.272) - $80,000
Decrease appropriations for the following account by the amount indicated below:
Non-Departmental - General Fund - Reserve for Appropriation (09130.579002.272) - $80,000
