PURPOSE:

To consider accepting grant funds in the amount of $90,000 from the DeKalb County Board of Health to conduct, promote and provide community outreach for flu vaccination clinics in DeKalb County and to appropriate the funds to the grant fund.

NEED/IMPACT:

The ongoing Coronavirus pandemic which continues to circulate COVID-19 and its variants throughout DeKalb County

and other parts of the world, make it critical to introduce prevention strategies to reduce the spread of influenza during the

2021-2022 Flu season. The Flu isn’t a “bad cold” and it can result in serious health complications, such as pneumonia,

bacterial infections, and hospitalization. The Flu can sometimes even lead to death. All people can be at risk of

developing serious flu complications, however some people are at higher risk than others. Children, pregnant women,

people with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes and or heart disease and individuals 65 years and older are

among those most at risk for serious complications of the Flu.

The DeKalb Board of Health received Racial & Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) funding from the

Centers for Disease Control & Prevention to support COVID-19 and flu vaccination efforts. The REACH program is

designed to reduce racial and ethnical health disparities in local communities. The Human Services Department will

support outreach efforts to encourage minority seniors and other members of the community to get vaccinated against the

Flu. Clinics will be held at senior centers and other approved locations within the County. The contract is designed to

begin September 1, 2021 and end September 2023.

FISCAL IMPACT:

There is no fiscal impact to the General Fund- as this grant award comes from the DeKalb Board of Health and does not require a match.
