Funding for Orion Drive Bridge Replacement or Upgrade

PURPOSE:
To consider accepting and appropriating up to $500,000 of GDOT Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant (LMIG) Funds for upgrading or replacing the Orion Drive bridge over South Fork Peachtree Creek;
To consider reserving $150,000 of SPLOST funds from line 1B - Federal and State Transportation Project Match Funds for Transportation Purposes for upgrading or replacing the Orion Drive bridge; and
To consider authorizing the Chief Executive Officer to execute all necessary documents for completion of this project.
NEED/IMPACT:
Orion Drive is the primary access to the south side of the North DeKalb Mall site. There are currently vehicle weight restrictions on the bridge. This project will bring the bridge up to current design standards by either upgrading the existing bridge structure or by building a replacement bridge. The initial design step will be to evaluate options for upgrading the bridge and to develop concept level cost estimates. The feasibility of adding a multi-use trail crossing to the bridge for a future extension of the South Fork Peachtree Creek Trail will also be evaluated.
FISCAL IMPACT:
If upgrading the bridge is possible, the local share is not expected to exceed the $150,000 proposed to be funded from SPLOST line 1B funds. There is likely to be additional fiscal impact if replacement of the bridge is necessary.
