PURPOSE:

The John Lewis Commemorative Task Force was created in 2021 and designated the former site of the Confederate Obelisk Monument as the future memorial site honoring Congressman John Lewis.  The Task Force has determined acceptance of the proposed monument for placement on County property is an appropriate means to honor the life and legacy of the Congressman John Lewis and celebrate Congressman Lewis’ remarkable life and fight for civil rights, justice and equality.  The acceptance of the proposed monument to Congressman Lewis for placement on County property is the request of the Task Force. 

 

NEED/IMPACT:

Commemorate Congressman John Lewis’ life with a monument to him in the County seat - the Congressional District Mr. Lewis represented for over thirty-three (33) years.

 

FISCAL IMPACT:

The donation is at no cost to the County, but the placement and maintenance of the monument will include costs to be determined by circumstances.

To accept the donation and authorize the chief executive officer to execute all necessary documents....
