PURPOSE:

MARTA System currently is the largest mass transportation system in the United States not receiving state funding.  Request Georgia State Legislators create a line item in the state budget to fund the MARTA System annually.

NEED/IMPACT:

MARTA System needs sustainable on-going state funding for infrastructure, multi-modal transit growth and operational expenses.  MARTA has a $1.3 billion dollar budget- operating budget is $557.1 million, and the capital expenditure budget is $749.2 million with some 45,000 employees. MARTA is funded by a one-cent sales tax collected in Clayton, DeKalb, and Fulton counties; and a 1.5 cents levy in the City of Atlanta. MARTA is currently using CARES and ARP funding to bridge funding gaps Since the formation of MARTA, the Georgia state government has not contributed to MARTA’s operational funding.

FISCAL IMPACT:

None
