Title

Commission District(s): Commission District 6

To Appropriate $35,000 from the 2023 District 6 Reserve for Appropriation for the Roots Down Fruitful Communities Education and Community Engagement Initiative

Body

Information Contact: Commissioner Edward C. “Ted” Terry

Phone Number: 404-371-4909

PURPOSE:

To appropriate $35,000 from the District 6 2023 reserve for appropriation to continue the partnership between D6 and the Roots Down Fruitful Communities Initiative focusing on education and community engagement.

NEED/IMPACT:

Since 2021, Commissioner Terry has supported The Fruitful Communities Initiative, resulting in successful DeKalb County initiatives for county-wide site productive urban landscape activations. This partnership with other local organizations and DeKalb County Facilities Management has progressed toward complete overhauls to landscaping around several County libraries, eliminating all grass and installing food forests and pollinator gardens with benches and tables for community enjoyment.

This District 6 2023 scope of work will narrow the focus and support Roots Down’s already-existing training and Productive Urban Landscape and Growers Program that encourages and supports green job opportunities for existing and future landscaping management, contractors, and vendors that develop and maintain public and private buildings, community parks, and greenspaces, to create more ecologically diverse spaces that feed people and fight climate change.

The scope of work has been included.

FISCAL IMPACT:

D6 Reserve for Appropriations POETA 105692.69110.521209.01.602458 to Roots Down-allocation (not to exceed) - $35,000

Allocation for tours - $20,000

Allocation for PUL track - $15,000

RECOMMENDATION:
