PURPOSE:

The proposed resolution The DeKalb County SPLOST Public Safety project list allocates $84,714,517 dollars for major improvements, upgrading, and a joint public safety training center for police and fire. Many of these SPOST funded projects are now completed or are in some phase of planning or execution. The proposed resolution assigns a working group to the Employee Relations and Public Safety Committee (ERPS) committee, the BOC committee of jurisdiction, tasked to expand community-centric inclusion, proactive transparency, and identifying and recommending best practice opportunities for SPLOST to maximize the highest level of service for both our responders and our county.

NEED/IMPACT:

The Dekalb County Board of Commissioners (BOC) acknowledges the importance of public safety and the need for well-trained police and fire department personnel to protect and serve the community. The DeKalb County SPLOST Public Safety project list includes multiple projects that improve and update the DeKalb County Fire and Police Departments.

The BOC further understands that in today’s evolving world, all aspects of public safety are faced with staying up to date on a wider range of issues than ever before. Where life safety is at risk, competence of the response is paramount. To best investigate the potential use of SPLOST sales tax funds for Police and Fire Department Training Infrastructure, this resolution assigns a working group to the ERPS committee tasked to investigate the appropriateness and feasibility while engaging community input to make informed recommendations and decisions regarding the allocation of the taxpayers’ dollars for the remaining SPLOST funded projects.

FISCAL IMPACT:
