PURPOSE:
To match the D2 appropriation agenda item 2023-0897 of $17,500 from the 2023 Budget Reserve for Appropriation for District 6 to 100 Black Men of DeKalb County, Inc. to support Cultural Experience for 18 Youth Ambassadors as part of their Leadership Academy.
NEED/IMPACT:
100 Black Men of DeKalb's Leadership Academy is embarking on a cultural exchange experience for 18 Youth Ambassadors in the program. This appropriation will help fill the gap between fundraising and what is necessary for the experience. The trip activities will address increasing civic engagement, financial literacy, community service and global citizenship. Global citizenship can play a role in reducing youth violence by promoting understanding, empathy, and fostering the development of peaceful communities. The Leadership Academy is sponsored by the DeKalb County Chapter of the 100 Black Men of America, Inc with support from local businesses, public agencies, and educational institutions. The Academy is designed to address the crisis in which black male youths find themselves today. The Leadership Academy focuses on providing a series of structured educational activities that allow black males to learn and experience new environments, like this year's travel to London, to provide opportunities for growth and development, support and enhanced self- esteem, teaching life-long living and learning skills.
