NEED/IMPACT:
Created by Karen Armstrong and the Council of Conscience in 2009, the Charter for Compassion was drafted by a diverse set of religious and community leaders and was designed to unite people globally, and restore compassion, empathy, and kindness to the center of life. The Charter encourages individuals and communities to engage in compassionate action, to foster understanding, and to work towards creating a more just and compassionate world. Specifically, the work of the DeKalb Board of Commissioners is intimately involved in acts of compassion as we work to address the immediate and long-term needs of our citizens, appropriate funding, and pass legislation rooted in justice for all. This resolution seeks to designate DeKalb County as a Compassionate County, adopting the Charter for Compassion and activating the Golden Rule as a guiding principle for personal behavior and public action.
