PURPOSE:
To appropriate $6,884 from 2023 District 2 Youth Reserves for the Youth Aviation Program at Peachtree DeKalb Airport.
NEED/IMPACT:
The Youth Aviation Program at Peachtree DeKalb Airport is a specialized initiative designed to educate and inspire young aviation enthusiasts ages 14-18. Each week, 6-10 youth are exposed to foundational knowledge in aviation, aircraft maintenance, and aircraft ownership. A cornerstone project of the program is the complete overhaul of a donor aircraft. Work performed by the students falls into three main categories: Airframe, Powerplant, and Support Equipment. The program is led by a collection of experienced mentors with cross functional specialties who are 100% volunteers. In lieu of hourly pay, each ten (10) hours of work students logged with the program is awarded one (1) hour of flight instruction with a licensed Certified Flight Instructor which includes pilot time, fuel cost, and aircraft rental. All logged time can be applied toward future pilot certification. This program is a pathway to gainful employment within aviation and seeks to expand to 30 students.
