PURPOSE:
To consider accepting an additional Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) Grant from the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council to the District Attorney’s Office in the amount of $225,796 for the grant period of October 01, 2023 - September 30, 2026; and
To authorize the CEO to execute all necessary documents.
NEED/IMPACT:
Since 2017, CJCC has been awarded an initial $8,000,000 under BJA’s 2017 Sexual Assault Initiative Grant to develop a cold case statewide Sexual Assault Task Force to respond to cases resulting from the testing of aged sexual assault kits identified under this project. DeKalb was identified, and has remained, a key partner in this initiative. Recently, the State received a continuation of the original grant, to continue all aspects of the existing project, which, among other costs, continued a SAKI Prosecutor and Investigator in the D.A.’s Office.
This current funding will provide for DeKalb a contract D.A.’s Investigator to work sexually motivated cold case homicides and assaults, as an addition to the current SAKI-funded staff.
FISCAL IMPACT:
No additional local funds are necessary, and none are being requested.
