PURPOSE:
To consider approval of a contract between DeKalb County and the Georgia Department of Human Services to provide transportation to eligible seniors and individuals with disabilities who live in DeKalb. This contract, if approved, will enable the County to reimburse the Georgia Department of Human Services for up to $538,645.50 worth of trips.

NEED/IMPACT:
Numerous community studies conducted by the Atlanta Regional Commission identify transportation as the number one need for people living in the Atlanta Metro Region. Seniors and individuals with disabilities have unique challenges with transportation that can significantly impact their quality of life. As the population continues to age, the need for reliable and safe transportation will increase.

The Human Services Department's Office of Aging Transportation has participated in the Sate Coordinated Transportation System since 2003. This partnership with the Georgia Department of Human Services has enabled the County to provide more than 2,000 transportation trips a month to eligible seniors and individuals with disabilities. Transportation services are used for medical appointments and dialysis appointments as well as trips to the senior centers, group trips into the community.
