PURPOSE:
?To consider approving use of DeKalb County's nomenclature and/or symbols by the Jewish Barbeque Festival and The Hebrew Order of David International (festival organizer); and
?To consider approving Officer Edwin Perkins' participation as owner of Carolina Chopped in the Jewish Barbeque Festival Cookoff on October 17, 2021, representing the DeKalb County Police Department; and
?To consider authorizing the Chief Executive Officer to execute the necessary documents.
NEED/IMPACT:
The Hebrew Order of David is a successor organization to a Jewish brotherhood, the Hebrew Order of Druids, originally established in England in 1896 as a friendly society for the benefit of its members. In 1995, the order was revived in the United Kingdom, and in 1999, a lodge was established in Atlanta, Ga. Today there are 24 Lodges worldwide, with direction and policy being provided by Grand Lodge in South Africa.
The Atlanta Kosher Barbeque Festival is the largest kosher barbeque competition in the Southeast. The festival strives to introduce kosher barbeque to aficionados in Atlanta and show new food options to those who follow the laws of kashrut. It (festival) was created based on the warm Southern hospitality, its barbecue teams experience, and the friendly competition of its barbeque chefs. The 2019 event champion, the BBQ'N Hebrew Hillbillies, will defend their crown against teams of amateurs and professionals, including teams consisting of several local police and fire rescue departments.
